Experiment, practice, and experiment some more! When we (the husband and I) bought our first home, we had no clue what we liked, or what would look good together. We had no previous qualifications in interiors, but we did know that it was our space and we should just get stuck in.
Inspiration is literally everywhere - go for a walk, head to your nearest coastline, or simply sit on the sofa and pull up Pinterest.
You will definitely have some fails, and that's OK, because if you don't make mistakes, you'll never learn what works for you. Initially, we painted the hallway magnolia (it's now a swear word in our house), then wallpapered it black with ornate swirls, then painted it duck egg blue, then wallpapered it with multicoloured stripes... then decided that grey would work best. I'm now bored of grey too!
Colour injects so much happiness around a home, even if it's just a cushion. Try it and see!
We've changed this room a few times (standard); initially grey, then dark blue, now this fabulous emerald green. This room is above the Wonder Room, so the chimney breast was removed at the same time.
MATT: I'm bored of grey, the dark blue didn't work, now what?
ME: How about some kind of sunshine made of wood?
MATT: We're not painting anything yellow.
ME: OK. How about you go to B and Q and just pick a colour that takes your fancy?
MATT: Right-o.
ME: I have bought a plant with pink in it to compliment the amaaazing green.
MATT: The pink is not working for me.
ME: OK... how about a shade of yellow. Mustard? With long curtains. And cushions.
MATT: Short curtains - they get in the way of the radiator. And no cushions, arghhhh!
Emerald green is such a luscious, luxurious colour, and I highly recommend it. Especially with the complimentary yellow, sorry, mustard!
The Wonder Room, aka the office, is my perfectness! In every other room of the house, Matt (husband!) and I have to 'agree' on decorating decisions. I must say, he has great taste, but my taste is a bit more... shall we say vibrant/bold/daring. So, when it came to MY office, I could do whatever I pleased. What a day! And this is how the conversation went...
ME: Darling, this is going to be my office. Could you do some kind of funky wave up to the ceiling?
MATT: Yep.
ME: What do you think of black and white stripes and yellow for the other bits, with a long desk?
MATT: Errrrrr... it’ll look horrendous.
ME: What would you like for dinner? Steak? Red wine? Your favourite pud?
MATT: I’ll get to work shall I? (That quote about men and food really is true!)
(except laminate LVT floor which was done with other rooms)
I am a huge fan of sunshine yellow - it brightens my mood and makes me feel rather jolly! And combined with black and white stripes is just my perfect combination. Matt got dizzy whilst putting the paper up and was concerned for my concentration welfare... but I love it!
We're lucky to have a lovely open hallway, but we wanted to keep it as light and airy as possible. There was a little wiggle room to use darker colours, such as the stairs' carpet and woodwork, which really complimented the light walls and slightly reflective flooring.
MATT: We need to sort this boring hallway out. What do you want?
ME: Black and white, as usual.
MATT: What the hell would you have black?
ME: Skirting boards, architraves and bannister - matt black if I have a preference, please.
MATT: Are you joking???
ME: Nope.
MATT: You get your black if I get my chrome spindles.
ME: I hate chrome.
MATT: I hate black.
And that is how we agree to contrasting opinions!

The combination of matt black, natural wood, off-white walls, the black and white zigzag rug, and green plants is a winning combination in my eyes. It's bright, open and airy, but has a slick modern twist.
